Call for Papers

Many countries have an increasingly ageing population. In recent years, mobile technologies have had a massive impact on social and working life. As the older adult population rises, many people will want to continue professional, social and lifestyle usage of mobiles into their 70s and beyond. Mobiles support community involvement and personal independence, but the ageing process can interfere considerably with their usage, e.g. through changes in vision, attention, and motor control. This workshop will bring together researchers who are re-imagining mobile interfaces so that they are more suited for use by older adults.

Position papers are sought related to topics including, but not limited to:
  • Multimodal interaction with older adults
  • Mobile input and visual interaction with older adults
  • Older adults and ubiquitous computing
  • Participatory design process for older adults
  • Mobile interface evaluation with older adults
  • Novel physical interaction for older adults
  • The effect and implications for mobile design of the ageing process
  • Interdisciplinary perspectives on mobile design for older adults
Position papers should be 4 pages in CHI extended abstract format. Accepted papers will be presented as posters or short talks, with plenty of time for discussion and demos. Authors will be invited to extend for a special issue of the International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction.

Computing, communication, and mobile technologies are among the most influential innovations that shape our lives today. Technology advancements such as mobile devices that reach over half of Earth's population, social networks with more than a billion members, and the rapid growth of Internet-connected devices (the Internet of Things) offer a unique opportunity to collect and communicate information among everybody and everything on the planet. Interacting with the physical world enriches our existing methods of information exchange — sharing our thoughts, communicating social events, and work collaboration via the new dimension of physical computing. This all-encompassing "new world of information" requires that we be able to process extremely large volumes of data to extract knowledge and insights related to our surrounding environment, personal life, and activities, on both local and global scales.

These trends have led to an emergence of physical-cyber-social (PCS) computing, which involves a holistic treatment of data, information, and knowledge from the physical, cyber, and social worlds to integrate, understand, correlate, and provide contextually relevant abstractions to humans and the applications that serve them. PCS computing builds on and significantly extends current progress in cyber-physical, socio-technical, and cyber-social systems. This emerging topic seeks to provide powerful ways to exploit data that are available through various IoT, citizen and social sensing, Web, and open data sources that have either seen or will soon see explosive growth. Providing interoperable information representations and extracting actionable knowledge from the deluge of human and machine sensory data are key issues.

This special issue seeks innovative contributions to computer systems and interaction design, information processing and knowledge engineering, and adaptive solutions associated with PCS computing and the novel applications it enables. Potential topics include:
  • semantics and information modeling; semantic integration, fusion, and abstraction strategies;
  • stream processing and reasoning on complex PCS data; real-time feedback control and response systems; human/event/situation-centered views of data streams;
  • pattern recognition, trend detection, anomaly and event detection, semantic event processing, and inferring actionable knowledge techniques;
  • spatio-temporal, location-aware, continuous, scalable, and dynamic analysis;
  • security, privacy, and trust issues in collection, storage, and processing; and
  • novel and significant PCS applications, deployments, and evaluations in areas including personalized and contextualized information and alerts, health, biomedicine, smart cities, and human/social/economic development.
Submission Guidelines

All submissions must be original manuscripts of fewer than 5,000 words, focused on Internet technologies and implementations. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to IC's international readership — primarily practicing engineers and academics who are looking for material that introduces new technology and broadens familiarity with current topics. We do not accept white papers, and we discourage strictly theoretical or mathematical papers. Cognitive Informatics and other forms?

Over the past couple of months I've posted on topics that include an example of Hodges' model related to the post's particular theme. In McGonigle and Mastrian's Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge, Second Edition (2012) on page 63 the editors cite Wang (2003):
Cognitive informatics attempts to solve problems in two connected areas in a bidirectional and multidisciplinary approach. In one direction, CI uses informatics and computing techniques to investigate cognitive science problems, such as memory, learning and reasoning; in the other direction, CI uses cognitive theories to investigate problems in informatics, computing and software engineering (p.120). 

I will leave it to you to consider the INTRA-INTERPERSONAL and SCIENCES domains, and not (just) how Wang's cognitive informatics 'fits' within Hodges' model, but what of the many other informatics fields. Here they seem like stepping stones, but taken together where do they lead to, from, ... about ...?

Each issue of ERCIM NEWS is a gift and for me it does not have to be a special theme that speaks directly to the health care, informatics or education communities. I have followed this publication and posted on W2tQ about many fascinating new issues. I'm sure it is over a decade ago since I also subscribed to Technicity, a magazine from Daimler. I bring the two publications together for two reasons (not due to sponsorship - how I wish):

Firstly, this is such a difficult time socio-economically in the EU, evinced in the proportions of younger adults who are unemployed. Publications like this show the opportunities for young people who aspire, but to do so they need the support and opportunities. Safety, design, materials science, energy systems and storage, city transport infrastructure and planning, security, nanotechnology, communications, vehicular informatics ... the possibilities for youths are amazing. In turn, however we need to recognize and respond to the employment potential of those whose path is not primarily academic and research based.

Secondly, in community mental health nursing services for older adults we often come across people who are still driving when their competency is most likely compromised. They should report an admission to hospital, prescribed medication or a specific diagnosis to the DVLA. ERCIM and Technicity both presage the arrival of autonomous vehicles. At present of course an 'intelligent car' depends on the intelligence of the driver. Which is why we get so annoyed when someone drives like an *^%$£!

Driving is a great responsibility and privilege. It is central to who we are, how we define ourselves, our independence, sustaining real social networks and - in my case livelihood. I recognised decades ago there will come a time to hand over the keys. Doing so gracefully, informed by insight and self-awareness is the trick. I don't envy family doctors who have to deal with this when a patient  insists that they are safe behind the wheel. Sometimes we are ageist, hoping that a meeting with their doctor of some 20-30 years might carry some gravitas that their generation will still respond to. Add to this though that the person concerned is not always elderly. It can be very difficult for the driver (person, patient) concerned and their families too. Amid all this, as a community nurse you are trying to establish trust, empathy and rapport. Each time this issue is encountered: it is novel.

I don't want to suggest that suddenly the person behind the wheel is 'unintelligent', far from it. Evidence shows that a diagnosis of dementia does not immediately mean surrender of a driver's license. Behind dementia, however lie altered faculties that add up to more than synonyms: cognitive impairment, impaired perception, recall, and decision making, reduced concentration and attention. I thought there might be something in this issue of ERCIM related to dementia; monitoring the physiological state of the driver, reactions, attention, stress levels, eye movement. Is there a signature for health in driving behaviours?
Unlike other methods of detecting tiredness, the Mercedes-Benz system evaluates a series of indicators in order to assess the alertness of the driver and to recognise the gradual transition between being awake and being tired. AME.info
Our sense of being, of personhood is heightened by movement. When do we feel most alive? What is the most important factor in health and well-being? There are moments when we are stationary and time passes us by. There are other occasions when we move through time. We literally project our ego through time. We enjoy sharing with friends where will be in the future and when we can also suspend time. Cars and air travel extend these abilities, AND mobilities.

The danger is when we pass through not only time but distance at speed without a reliable sense of judgement, without a wholly coherent sense of self and responsibility.

In the not too distant future all this of course could lead us to a new definition of self-care at least in this context?

Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) fines Glasgow City Council £150,000

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has fined Glasgow City Council £150,000 for the loss of two unencrypted laptops, one of which contained personal details about more than 20,000 people.

...

An ICO investigation discovered that - despite previous warnings - Glasgow City Council had provided staff with unencrypted laptops after there had been problems with encryption software. At least 74 of these laptops remain unaccounted for, with at least six of them known to have been stolen.

Overview
Journal of Learning Analytics is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal, disseminating the highest quality research in the field. The journal is the official publication of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR). With an international Editorial Board comprising leading scholars, it is the first journal dedicated to research into the challenges of collecting, analysing and reporting data with the specific intent to improve learning and teaching practice. “Learning” is broadly defined across a range of contexts, including informal learning on the internet, formal academic study in institutions (primary/secondary/tertiary), and workplace learning.

The journal seeks to connect researchers and developers with practitioners, creating and disseminating new tools and techniques, studying transformations, and providing ongoing evaluation and critique of the conceptual, technical, and practical outcomes. The interdisciplinary focus of the journal recognizes that computational, pedagogical, institutional, policy and social domains must be brought into dialogue with each other to ensure that interventions and organizational systems serve the needs of all stakeholders. The journal seeks to bring into dialogue the intersection of the fields of Education, Computation and Sensemaking.
Journal of Learning Analytics welcomes papers that either describe original research or offer a review of the state of the art in a particular area. The journal also welcomes practice-focused papers that detail Learning Analytics applications in real-world settings, provided that they offer innovative insights for advancing the field (see the About section).

Research Papers
Journal of Learning Analytics welcomes papers that either describe original research or offer a review of the state of the art in a particular area of learning analytics. No submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review elsewhere.  Submissions that extend previously published conference papers are welcome provided that the journal submission has sufficiently been extended (at least 25-30% of new contribution).

The Reflective Practitioner Section
This section of the Journal of Learning Analytics is peer-reviewed and  covers the application of learning analytics across a diversity of contexts. This section spotlights trends and practices; provides new insights and ideas; and analyzes the implications of learning analytics. This section is not intended as an avenue for publication of research articles.

SATBI+SWIM 2012 - Joint Workshop on Semantic Technologies Applied to Biomedical Informatics and Individualized Medicine - Call for Papers

A defining characteristic of the next decade of biomedical research will be the explosion in the range and quantity of biomedical information, especially as it relates to individualized therapies. The purpose of this joint workshop is to discuss research challenges, results, methods and advances in the application of Semantic Web technologies to translating the wealth of biomedical information into therapies, tools, and care practices that improve health for patients and communities.

The workshop aims to attract researchers from Computer Science, Information Science, Biomedicine, Bioinformatics, and related areas to share research challenges, results, methods and advances in the appliance of Semantic Web technologies to two domains within Clinical and Translational research - bioinformatics and individualized medicine.

SATBI+SWIM 2012 has been divided in two separate tracks:

Track 1: SATBI (Semantic Applied Technologies on Biomedical Informatics)
Track 2: SWIM (Applying Semantic Web Technology for Clinical Decision Support and Cohort Identification in Individualized Medicine)
