Exoplanets, exobiology, exocortex, exocare ...?

Exoplanets

planets outside the solar system
An exoplanet (or extrasolar planet) is a planet orbiting a star different from the Sun (the "exo" prefix means "outside" in Greek). Up until now, one has found mainly gas giant planets, which are easier to detect than telluric planets. However, due to the increasing sensitivity of the detection methods, one already begins to observe the first planets of sizes comparable to the Earth.

Exobiology
The term exobiology ... covers the search for life beyond Earth, and the effects of extraterrestrial environments on living things.

Exocortex
-noun
An artificial external information processor that augments the brain's high-level cognition. Julia used her exocortex to access the memory of her tenth birthday.

Exobuilding
ExoBuilding explores the novel design space that emerges when an individual‟s physiological data and the fabric of building architecture are linked. In its current form ExoBuilding is a tent - like structure that externalises a person's physiological data in an immersive and visceral way. This is achieved by mapping abdominal breathing to its shape and size, displaying heart beat through sound and light effects and mapping electro dermal activity to a projection on the tent fabric.

n.
ex·o·skel·e·ton ( k s -sk l -tn). n. A hard outer structure, such as the shell of an insect or crustacean, that provides protection or support for an organism.

Exocare: Depends on your perspective - context / situation sensitive

Care exercised by a planet, or that planet's representation (on Earth the UN) towards life on other worlds, includes ethics, protocols and first contact.
See also: http://www.seti.org/post-detection.html

Care not delivered by statutory health services. Care delivered by the individual also described as self-care.

Care directed at specific celestial objects, often as a result of long held ethnocultural beliefs and customs, the moon for example.

Care that extends 'human ecosystems' to what is external to the physical self, to encompass Gaia - the Earth and biosphere. Love directed not at a single person, or thing but the sense of what is whole.

Also refers to the use of a conceptual framework to frame reflections on health and social care - individually, socially or globally. Provides a means to integrate concepts of care according to the situation and salience incorporating the individual-group (population); the local, global and glocal.

Space to reflect

2013 could be quite a year for comets, at least in the northern hemisphere.

As we reflect in our studies and at work it is vital to take a breathe and reflect when we can on things otherwordly - Comet PanSTARRS:

Weather permitting after work  I will visit Parbold Hill to get a good view of the western horizon.

I've tried on two evenings - 12th - 13th - to spot PanSTARRS without success. There's still time as it moves north. The new moon was quite a sight last evening. Through the binoculars a jet very low down looked like a rocket - the shuttle taking off. Between the low clouds I watched the sun set: cue reflection

In orbit*: Where a model of global health care should be

What platform are you using
to monitor and positively impact
the minutiae of care
and the whole picture?

* and in mind.

On 25 May, NASA's Phoenix lander was 10 kilometres above the surface of Mars and less than three minutes from landing when it was captured passing in front of Heimdall crater by the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).

Personalised care and gravitas (literally)

The Einstein Cross Gravitational Lens
Original Image Credit & Copyright:
  J. Rhoads (Arizona State U.) et al.

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is described as follows:

Most galaxies have a single nucleus -- does this galaxy have four? The strange answer leads astronomers to conclude that the nucleus of the surrounding galaxy is not even visible in this image. The central cloverleaf is rather light emitted from a background quasar. The gravitational field of the visible foreground galaxy breaks light from this distant quasar into four distinct images. The quasar must be properly aligned behind the center of a massive galaxy for a mirage like this to be evident. The general effect is known as gravitational lensing, and this specific case is known as the Einstein Cross. ...

Health care problems can weigh very heavy on the individual affected by them and their loved ones. To deliver personalised care we first need to resolve the four care domains (five including the spiritual). If personalised care is to be realised (aligned and integrated) in practice and not just two words in policy (political lensing), then we need to remember personalised care can be an illusion in itself.

Olympic Torches, History and Nostalgia for the Light

I never got to see the Olympic torch procession,  although I crossed its path on a couple of occasions.

This for me has much significance    +

In Euxton, Lancashire and more recently I found myself ahead of the relay in Oxford.

I saw a torch at the Disability Awareness Day in Warrington.

A prized possession: a keepsake of a lifetime.

Over the weekend I went to see the film - Nostalgia for the Light. A documentary that is simultaneously challenging, troubling, poetic and beautiful. A journey through history in its multiple forms; astronomy, and archaeology - ancient and modern. The setting is the Atacama desert. The astronomers using various telescopes explore celestial bodies, taking advantage of the elevation and transparency of the sky. The extremely low humidity that also supports such observations also preserves human bodies. Not just those thousands of years old, but human bodies from more recent times. Those of Chile's "disappeared" those who have been found and those still lost to their families.

Skeletons abounded. Ancient mummies, more recent explorers and miners. I noticed how these skeletons can give up their secrets from belongings, clothing, identified by relatives.

How telescopes themselves are skeletized in their design to save weight, cost. Today the affluent can purchase a skeletized watch - to make a statement. Mechanism. To mark their personal history. History.

What legacy? What cost?

Around the world : dictatorship.

Light seeking light, seeking peace and a final release.
